If you are looking for a millet you can eat during Navratri fasting, the answer is samak — also written सामा / समक / व्रत के चावल (Sama / Samak / Vrat ke chawal). Samak is simply barnyard millet, and it is the one millet that is traditionally allowed during vrat because it is treated as a fasting grain rather than a regular cereal.

What is samak (vrat ke chawal)?

Samak = barnyard millet. In Hindi it is called सांवा / झंगोरा (Sanwa / Jhangora) and, in the fasting context, सामा / समक / व्रत के चावल. It looks like tiny rice grains, cooks quickly, is light on the stomach and naturally gluten-free — which is why it has been a Navratri and Ekadashi staple for generations. (These names are from our millet names in Hindi guide.)

Which millets are vrat-friendly — and which are not

This is where people often get confused, so here is the honest picture:

MilletNavratri vrat?
Barnyard (Samak / Sama / Vrat ke chawal)✅ Traditionally allowed — the classic fasting millet
Foxtail, Kodo, Little, BrowntopUsually not — treated as regular grains (anna) by most traditions
Bajra (pearl), Jowar (sorghum), Ragi (finger)Usually not — considered cereals, avoided during vrat

So among the millets, samak (barnyard) is the vrat exception; the everyday millets like bajra, jowar, ragi, foxtail and kodo are generally not eaten while fasting. Other common vrat foods — kuttu (buckwheat), singhara (water chestnut) and rajgira (amaranth) — are not millets at all. As always, practices differ from family to family, so follow your own tradition.

Samak recipes for fasting

Samak is versatile — treat it like rice:

How to cook samak

Rinse well and, if you have time, soak for 15–20 minutes. Cook about 1 part samak to 2–2.5 parts water until soft and fluffy — it cooks faster than rice. For water ratios across every millet, see how to cook millets perfectly.
